Services Chemical Peels Overview Of Chemical Peels Procedure Chemical peels can treat facial discoloration such as brown, mottled or muddy pigment - usually from the sun or the combination of sun and hormone treatment. They also help tighten the facial pores and smooth fine lines and wrinkles. Chemical peels can also improve whiteheads and blackheads that are seen with acne. There are different types of chemical peels. We usually think of them as superficial or light chemical peels versus medium depth chemical peels or deep chemical peels. We use two types of acids for our light chemical peels - glycolic acid (an alpha hydroxy acid), and salicylic acid (a beta hydroxy acid) . Our glycolic peels are by MD Forte´, a leading company in the development of glycolic acid products for the face and body. Glycolic and salicylic acids have been found to loosen the upper most layers of dead skin so that new skin can develop more normally, and they also seem to stimulate growth of collagen and elastin fibers in the deeper layers of the skin. When patients come to the office for a light chemical peel they are usually seen by a nurse who instructs them to wash their face to clean off all makeup and dirt. A prepping solution is applied to the skin, usually using cotton swabs or gauze pads. Once the face is clean and prepared, either a 70% or 99% glycolic acid solution, or a 20% or 30% salicylic acid solution is applied to the skin. This is left on for a period of time that varies from 3 to 9 minutes. Afterwards the acid is neutralized and washed off with water, and makeup can be applied immediately if desired. |
