What is the philosophy behind the Obagi Nu Derm products and steps involved?

The Obagi System recognizes that your skin is a living organ with interacting functions. Restoring the health of your skin cannot happen if you merely treat the symptoms. To achieve and maintain skin health, you must correct the underlying problems and stimulate the growth of new, radiant, healthy skin cells. The Obagi Nu-Derm System meets this challenge with a daily program of five easy steps:

Enhancing is the skin's ability to respond to treatment in a process of cleaning and toning … and to keep the skin's pH normal.

Correction is designed to correct skin disorders and problems, and to restore visible purity to the skin surface.

Stimulation restores skin elasticity, enhances the production of collagen, and replaces old damaged cells.

Moisturizing is a process necessary if you have dry skin; moisturizers are needed on occasion or not at all when Skin Health and Fitness is restored.

Prevention of sun damage by using a specially created sun block with zinc, a natural broad-spectrum sun reflector that will not clog pores. This special formula protects and treats as it prevents sunspots and pigmentation problems.

Maintenance is a program to keep your skin in a healthy state after correction and stimulation has been achieved. You may stay on the Maintenance Program indefinitely.

What is the Obagi Blue Peel?

The Obagi Blue Peel is a superior chemical peel that achieves optimum results with unprecedented safety and a reduced recovery time. An astounding 7-10 day healing process, the Obagi Blue Peel is a breakthrough treatment done in our office and can successfully treat all skin colors and all skin types.

How is the Obagi Blue Peel different than the Alpha Hydroxy products used by doctors and aestheticians today?

The Obagi Blue Peel represents a breakthrough and significant improvement in skin rejuvenation. Using slow acting TCA [Trichloracetic Acid], instead of glycolic acid, the Obagi Blue Peel enables the physician to control the peel process and its depth. A one to four step application of blue solution mixed with TCA will lead to the removal of thin surface layers of aged and damaged skin. Layers of dead skin cells exfoliate and are replaced by healthier ones allowing the skin's own clarity and tightness to resurface.

This process is tailored to the nature of the problem to be corrected:

wrinkles
scars
small pre-cancers
sun damage
pigmentation problems

Will the Obagi Blue Peel procedure damage my skin?

As with any procedure, there can be risks involved. The Obagi Blue Peel has a built in safety mechanism to avoid unnecessary depth by monitoring the even application of the blue color. This acts as a guide for the Blue Peel solution application and results in a very high safety profile.

How many Obagi Blue Peel layers can be done and how long will it take?

Your doctor will determine how many layers are necessary to achieve the desired result. In most cases the procedure takes 30-45 minutes, plus time for post care instructions.

How deep will the peel be?

Depending upon the condition of your skin, up to 4 layers of the Obagi Blue Peel solution will be applied.

Is the Blue Peel painful?

At each level, you will experience a mild burning sensation that lasts 3 to 5 minutes. You may be given an electric fan and cool packs to minimize this sensation. Most people will not require sedation. If the doctor indicates sedation, you will need someone to drive you home.

What should I expect to look and feel like after the Blue Peel?

Even though the peeling process does not hurt, a bluish tent usually remains on your skin for 12 to 24 hours. Then your skin will peel for 2 to 3 days and is usually healed in 7 to 10 days.

Can the Obagi Blue Peel procedure be used to treat other parts of the body?

Yes. We have performed the Blue Peel on necks, chest, abdomens, hands, backs, shoulders, arms, and legs using the same technique as for the face with the same high safety profile. Discuss the benefits of this process with your doctor.

Can I do the Obagi Blue peel procedure myself?

No, the Obagi Blue Peel is a medical procedure and MUST be performed by a physician or a properly trained specialist working under the direct supervision of your physician.

At Dermatology Consultants, our Obagi Blue Peel specialists have had extensive training in this area and have performed numerous successful peels. Furthermore, each specialist has acquired extensive education in preparing the skin for a predictable peel as well as the post peel care regimen.
