What are Wrinkles?

Wrinkles are caused by Age

Wrinkles are lines or creases in our skin that start to form with age.  The skin is made up of many complex building blocks.  Those building blocks break down as we age.  For example, cells of young skin produce collagen ( a building block).  Those same cells when older start to  produce a chemical that breaks down collagen.  Wrinkles form as a result of the loss of that collagen and other building blocks.

Wrinkles are caused by Sun Light

It is a fact that too much ultraviolet light causes wrinkles.  We get ultraviolet light from the sun and from tanning beds.  Avoid tanning beds to prevent wrinkles.  The outdoor sun is most intense between 11:00 am and 3:00 pm.  Avoid the sun during those hours to prevent wrinkles. Wear sunscreen to prevent wrinkles.  Sun Protection Factor (SPF) is the label put on moisturizers to indicate the degree of protection from the sun.  Wear a moisturizer with an SPF 30 or greater every day to prevent wrinkles.

Wrinkles are caused by Smoking

Smoking causes wrinkles.  Do not smoke to prevent wrinkles.  Treatments that are performed to correct and soften wrinkles do not last as long or work as well in people who smoke.  Consult with your primary care physician to stop smoking.

Neuromodulators are great for wrinkles around the eyes and forehead but do not help cheek wrinkles. Fillers can be used in the upper cheeks to create more fullness and lift the cheek. Learn More about Cheek Wrinkles
