Lip Rejuvenation

February 26, 2015

lipsrejuvAs we age our lips go from looking naturally plump to shriveled (think grape to raisin).  We can reverse that by using conservative amounts of a hyluronic acid filler to plump the lips back up.  Restylane Silk, being introduced this month, is an FDA approved filler for the lips that restores the youthfulness of the lips without giving too much volume.  The key is to inject CONSERVATIVE amounts so that you do not look like Goldie Hawn in First Wives Club.  Even with conservative amounts, some people will swell.  Swelling usually does not last more than 3 to 6 days.  If you tend to swell or are worried about swelling you can take an over the counter antihistamine like, allegra, claritin or zyrtec before you have your treatment.  If you are driving ,do not take benadryl, it makes you too drowsy.  If you are prone to cold sores you may also want to have some valcyclovir on hand to take since lip injections can sometimes trigger cold sores.  Combining a tiny amount of neuromodulator (Dysport, Botox, Xeomin) with a small amount of filler can rejuvenate the lip to look naturally plump again.
